If you’re considering an ADHD assessment, you may be feeling a mix of curiosity, relief, or uncertainty. Many people arrive at this point after years of wondering why focus, organization, motivation, or follow-through feels harder than it should.
A structured ADHD assessment helps clarify what’s going on and whether ADHD is the best explanation for your experiences. At One Psychology Clinic, our ADHD assessments are comprehensive, evidence-based, and designed to provide both clarity and practical next steps. We offer both virtual assessments and in-person assessments in midtown Toronto. As these assessments are completed and signed by a clinical psychologist, they are widely accepted by secondary and post-secondary institutions, workplaces, and family physicians.
Below is a step-by-step overview of what the process looks like.
Step 1: Intake Session (Initial Consultation)
Your ADHD assessment begins with a 60-minute intake session with a clinician.
This session focuses on understanding your concerns and your lived experience. We explore areas such as:
Current difficulties with attention, focus, or procrastination
Emotional regulation and overwhelm
Organization, planning, and time management
Work, school, or daily functioning challenges
Mental health history (e.g., anxiety, depression, burnout)
Childhood history of attention or behavioural patterns
Previous diagnoses or treatments
Because ADHD symptoms can overlap with other conditions, this first step helps us build a full clinical picture before moving forward.
Step 2: Clinical Interviews + Standardized Questionnaires
Most ADHD assessments include 1-3 additional sessions depending on your needs.
These sessions allow us to gather more detailed information about how symptoms show up across different areas of your life.
We may explore:
When symptoms first began and how they have changed over time
Patterns in attention, motivation, and task completion
Impulsivity and emotional regulation
How symptoms present at work, school, and home
Executive functioning strengths and challenges
You will also complete standardized ADHD questionnaires. These tools help provide a structured, evidence-based measure of symptoms.
In some cases, we may ask for additional information such as report cards or input from someone who knows you well (with your consent), to support diagnostic clarity.
Step 3: Psychological Report Writing
After all assessment information is collected, your clinician completes a comprehensive psychological report.
This includes:
Relevant developmental and personal history
Summary of test results and clinical interviews
Diagnostic impressions (if applicable)
Clinical formulation of how symptoms fit together
Personalized recommendations
This report can be shared with your family doctor, school, university accessibility services, or workplace if accommodations are needed.
Step 4: Feedback Session
The final step is a feedback appointment where we review your results together.
This session is focused on clarity and understanding. We will go over:
Whether ADHD criteria are met
Any additional diagnoses or contributing factors
How symptoms impact your daily functioning
Your personal strengths and challenges
Recommended next steps
Recommendations may include therapy, ADHD-focused strategies, workplace or academic accommodations, and, when appropriate, a referral to a physician to discuss medication options.
Most importantly, you leave with a clear understanding of what is going on and a plan moving forward.
Why a Comprehensive ADHD Assessment Matters
ADHD symptoms can overlap with many other experiences, including anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic stress, sleep difficulties, and burnout.
A comprehensive assessment ensures we are not only identifying symptoms, but also understanding their underlying cause. This leads to more accurate diagnoses and more effective treatment recommendations.
